For this article, we'll concentrate on just a few of the free or inexpensive attractions in Midtown that make New York City great.
Central Park
In the heart of New York City (Manhattan) lies a large green space used by residents and visitors alike. Many New Yorkers spend time jogging or biking down the tree lined paths of the park. There is a lake where you can rent a small boat or perhaps you would like to take a ride in a horse drawn carriage. Kids will enjoy a ride on the carousel as well as running around in the grassy meadow. The park also hosts free concerts where you may see anything from classic music performed by a world class orchestra to a country performance by Garth Brooks. There's plenty of things to see in the park or you could just bring a little lunch and have a relaxing picnic in this oasis in the center of the city.
St. Patrick's Cathedral
The largest Gothic-styled Cathedral in the United States is only a short walk from Central Park. Admire the buildings exterior and then step inside to see some of the most ornate decor including priceless art and stained glass.
Fifth Avenue
If you love shopping, this is one of the best streets in the world to find what you've always been looking for. The famous Saks Fifth Avenue along with numerous upscale boutiques and interesting stores will keep you busy for hours.
Rockerfeller Center
Really best to see in winter when the big Christmas tree is lit, this is home to NBC Studios, where you can take a backstage tour of the operations. During the winter, watch the people pirouette on the ice skating rink.
Times Square/Broadway
A short walk away is the area where many Broadway Theaters drawer thousands of fans to see the best live performances by the best actors in the world. If you're willing to wait in line you can purchase half priced tickets to selected shows at the "Ticket Booth" in the square.
