The city is laid out like a grid so that there aren't any confusing streets or turns. Many attractions and places of interest are very close together, so if you're staying in a central part of New York many of the places you might wish to visit could be in easy walking distance.

There are underground stations located throughout the city, and each one has a map that you can use to figure out what route you need to take to get where you're going and if you'll need to switch trains at any point. You can buy a one use metro ticket or if you're planning to stay a bit longer and use the subway more, you can buy a longer use ticket at discounted prices.
Buses

In addition, there are tourist and sightseeing buses that you can use to get to different tourist attractions that you might wish to see. Most of these sightseeing buses are hop on, hop off, so if you want to stay at a certain attraction longer you are free to go and get another bus later.
Taxis
If you can't seem to find a way to get where you want to go, a taxi will take you anywhere you want in New York City. Taxis are everywhere, so you can just hail an empty one on the street, get in, and tell them where you want to go.
